Resisting the Devil

"The nineteenth century French poet Charles Baudelaire wrote that 'the devil’s best trick is to persuade you that he doesn’t exist.' In the providence of God, the Devil has been quite successful in persuading his followers that he doesn’t exist. But we who are followers of the Lord Jesus Christ know all too well that he does, indeed, exist, as we wrestle daily against our enemy and the rulers, authorities, cosmic powers, and spiritual forces of evil (Eph. 6:12).'

In his editorial for February's issue of Tabletalk, Burk Parsons introduces an edition of the magazine that is entirely unique. "In the spirit of Lewis’ Screwtape Letters, we offer twenty similar letters written from the perspective of a senior demon to a junior demon on issues ranging from racism to cynicism, legalism to criticism."

Lincoln and Day of Thanksgiving Day

In spite of the problems we face in our nation regarding the economy, religious liberty and increasing godlessness, we still have much to be thankful for. I’m thankful for my family, a wonderful wife, good health and a wonderful year of growth and influence through books such as The Harbinger. I know you’ll take time, as I do, to thank God for His many blessings.
It’s also a good time to be reminded of how many problems there were in 1863, when Abraham Lincoln told the country it should put aside a day to thank God for His blessings. Enjoy reading his own words in his proclamation dated Oct. 3, 1863:

It was a miracle! - Happy Thanksgiving Day!

November always brings out the historian in me-undoubtedly a result of those Thanksgiving theatricals at my elementary school. The class would dress as Pilgrims; my broad brimmed hat stabilized by a pair of crumpled ears.

Descansar en la Fe

Why to offend?

"Daniel 3:16 says, 'O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. But even if he doesn't, Your Majesty can be sure that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up." [...]

God Never Fails!

"Faith is believing and trusting God and hoping for the evidence of things not seen. Faith in God gives us confidence, hope, peace and joy. God wants us to put our faith in action. Many people believe God, but they do not trust enough to believe in Gods promises .They are often filled with worry, [...]"

One Way, Love and Humility!

Years ago I remember a friend telling me that C.S. Lewis once said something to the effect: “When you meet a truly humble person you won’t walk away thinking about how humble he was. You’ll walk away thinking what a great time you had and how much you were able to share about yourself.” I had forgotten that this was from Mere Christianity, until today when Justin Taylor linked to the quote, as did a commenter on this blog. Here’s the real thing:

Do not imagine that if you meet a really humble man he will be what most people call “humble” nowadays: he will not be a sort of greasy, smarmy person, who is always telling you that, of course, he is nobody. Probably all you will think about him is that he seemed a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him.

Lewis’ point is well taken, and, as always, well put. The humble person does not draw attention to his humility; he draws conversation out of you.

'He revealth deep and secret things.' Daniel 2:22

All of us love secrets. We love knowing what no one else knows. We love knowing the secret, whether it's the secret ingredient or the secret password. Few things are more appealing than secrets. And that's why a book simply titled The Secret can sell millions of copies.

I think many Christians are content with a superficial knowledge of God. But there is a secret knowledge that God wants to reveal to us, but it takes a pressing into His presence via worship and prayer and fasting. And there is a price that needs to be paid. I think the price is purity of heart. If your motives are holy, to simply know God, then God will reveal deep and secret things that will forever alter the way you see everything.

When "Leadership" is not Biblical?

There’s been much ranting and raving on the inadequacies of leadership in the church, but I must admit I recoil whenever I hear people say “leadership is Biblical” for a lot of reasons. When I say “leadership” I am talking about the way the term has become adopted into the vernacular of evangelical conferences and books (most recently exhibited in this article). Last night at our “leadership meeting” (wink wink) I went off on a rant on this very topic (I have since had to repent – to me repentance is the best way of leading I know). I posted something on Facebook and a lot of brothers and sisters set me straight. So, after learning much on Facebook (it is good for something), I feel like I need to put out there why I think leadership in this mode is not Biblical, why we might need to find a new word when we are talking about what leaders do in a church, and why if we are ever going to truly “lead” a community into the Kingdom it requires a skill quite different than what many in the church have come to describe as “leadership.”

Here are five comments on why “leadership” is not Biblical.

Christianity and Materialism?

Answer: Materialism is defined as “the preoccupation with material things rather than intellectual or spiritual things.” If a Christian is preoccupied with material things, it is definitely wrong. That is not to say we cannot have material things, but the obsession with acquiring and caring for “stuff” is a dangerous thing for the Christian, for two reasons.
